Selecting Fabrics for Different Spaces

Thoughtfully selecting fabrics for your upholstery and window treatments based on the room they occupy can go a long way toward helping set the mood you want in each of your home’s nooks and crannies. Not doing so can create disharmony in your interior design and the early wear of gorgeous but ill-advised textiles. For instance, in most cases, it doesn’t make much sense to upholster your dining room chairs with white, fluffy fabric. Likewise, you probably wouldn’t use a coarse tweed fabric on an oversized sectional sofa or as drapes, framing your great room’s tall, grand windows. Use this convenient guide to discover which textiles work well in each of the most important spaces in your home!

Living/Great Room

The textile you choose for shared spaces in your home depends largely on its use. Seldom used rooms, for instance, might benefit from luxurious, textured blends with wool. However, in busy rooms where you entertain or where children play, durable fabrics, such as corduroys or microfiber blends work well.

Dining Room

Beautiful, yet demanding, fabrics like velvet or chenilles work well in dining room window treatments. as for upholstery and dining room chairs, the most important factor is the color. Light colors will show marks more easily. Unless you have a bold color choice in mind (in which case, go for it), a good middle ground is a gray or tope colored material.

Bedroom

Your bedroom offers the most options when it comes to fabric selection. You’re much more able to control the wear and tear in this room, so you can feel free to allow your personal style to shine. Polyester, lace, brocade, velvet, linen, or classic cotton are all viable choices for bedroom window treatments, as are many others!

Kitchen

Kitchen chairs are similar to dining room chairs in that they should have an easy mix of softness and durability while still offering a visual appeal. Microfiber is designed to be stain and spill resistant and can be spot cleaned as needed, so it is one of our favorite choices for kitchen upholstery. As for kitchen window treatments, If they’re in a safer location, roman shades, roller shades, and woven wood shades are all excellent options.

Bathroom

The best bathroom window treatments are made from a thick linen fabric, roller shades, or lines. Vinyl roller shades and faux wood shutters and blinds are our top picks since they’re resistant to moisture damage and easy to clean in case of mildew buildup.

Choosing the right textile for any room in your home is dependent on three main decisions—the color, the pattern, and the texture.
