2020 Midyear Design Trend Forecast

So far, 2020 has been nothing if not eventful. From vaccine-proof pandemics that stick around for months to murder hornet swarms popping up at random, the year has necessitated quick adaptation and change. The examples above have been overwhelming, to say the least, but other sources of change are comforting in that they’re evidence of an unshakeable undercurrent of creativity—namely, the dynamic changes to interior design trends predicted for the second half of the year! That’s right!! It’s the midyear review where we let you in on expert predictions about emerging trends and the "hots" vs the "nots" of 2020's fall and winter interior design.

The HOTS!!

1.) The Return of Wallpaper!! The trendy wallpapered accent wall popularized in recent years will fall from grace slightly at the end of 2020, but the wallpaper craze won’t be forgotten entirely. In fact, Christiana Coop, cofounder of Hygge & West, predicts that "next year, we’ll be seeing more rooms with all four walls wallpapered or painted in bold colors.” So, expect a trend in that direction.

2.) As you might have guessed, all things eco-friendly will continue to trend in design throughout the year. But it might be more surprising to hear that this summer and fall, design trends will bring the indoors out, instead of the outdoors in. What does that mean? Likely due to the rise in working remotely, homeowners are turning to outdoor spaces to both relax and do work, customizing and designing multi-functional areas in 4-seasons rooms, garages, and even backyard sheds!

3.) Painting a bold hue on the front door of your home’s exterior creates a striking first impression and instantly boosts curb appeal, but that’s nothing new. 2020 takes this trend inside out! Homeowners have recently started painting the interior of their front doors, choosing colors that contrast with the walls or lend themselves to a certain mood or overall aesthetic of the space. Design pros loved the idea and anticipate its growth until cold weather forces some to bring as much of their green space inside as possible.

The NOTS

1.) Popular designers are calling for an end to “greige,” the combination of beige and gray colors donning everything in a room from furniture to walls to carpets, although grey continues to be a popular paint color.

2.) Since long before the Coronavirus hit, people have been craving authenticity. In today's age, anything faux risks giving off an insincere or disingenuous vibe. One exception to this rule is that faux blankets and throws will continue their popularity.

3.) Gone are the days of the single-use space. COVID-19 has sped up the pre-existing process of transitioning our society to a remote workforce, and the closer we are to that reality, the more valuable multi-use spaces will become. Interior designers predict that open floor plans will continue to be prevalent, but the focus will shift in favor of functionality over formality.

Staying up-to-date on dynamically evolving interior design trends in the chaotic landscape of 2020 is actually a psychological survival hack.
