How to Mix and Match Window Treatments for a Unique Style

There are so many different window treatment options that it can be hard to pick just one type. Luckily, you don’t have to! Although there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to decorating your home, we have plenty of tips and tricks for how to mix and match your favorite window treatments in your home.

Layering Multiple Treatments on One Window

It may sound crazy, but you can absolutely layer multiple styles of window treatments on the same window. For example, many homeowners choose to layer curtains over blinds-- the blinds help to keep the light out when needed and provide privacy, while the curtains help to dress up the wall a bit.

If you’re planning on layering your window treatments like this, however, it is important to keep a few things in mind. When taking this approach, it is important that you pick colors and patterns that won’t drown out the rest of your room. You should also keep your choices consistent throughout the room to help tie the whole look together.

Using Different Treatments in Different Rooms

Unless there is a room in your home that is especially unique, it is common to use the same window treatments throughout the entire house. This is usually in an effort to maintain curb appeal-- after all, a home with matching window treatments tends to look more uniform. However, this is usually only an important factor with street-facing windows.

This is where you could tie in layering. Just because you want to use blinds or shutters in each window to make your home look more uniform and appealing from the street, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a little more fun on the inside. For example, you can use the same blinds throughout the house, but layer different colored curtains over them in each room.

You could also use different styles of window treatments for different-sized windows throughout your home. For example, you may want curtains for your French or sliding doors, but shades or shutters for your windows.

There Are No Rules

Ultimately, there are no rules when it comes to decorating your house! No matter how you decide to mix and match your window treatments, the most important part is that they help you to fall just a little more in love with your home.

The best thing you can do when it comes to adding a little more character to your home is go with your gut and pick elements that you love. Nothing feels better than loving your space!
